www.fire-x-point.co.uk
The
purpose of this web site is to raise the standard of firepoint
design and construction, not only in the building / civil engineering
industry but wherever the risk of fire exists, which may ultimately
result in injury or loss of life.
Each
of the photographs shown on the firepoints page is a genuine
attempt by a major contractor or hire company to construct / provide
a firepoint. Most are simply wooden boxes or sack barrows to hold
fire extinguishers but a firepoint, should be an information point
as well, providing information on both the fire fighting equipment
at the firepoint and the escape route from it.
Fire-x-point
has researched this requirement both through the current legislation
available and through talking to professionals in the health and
safety industry. The firepoint design which has resulted from
this is, we believe, the most comprehensive in the UK.
We are currently developing a re-useable photoluminescent escape
route marking and signage system, which will greatly reduce the
risk of disorientation in the case of fire or other emergency.
MULTI-POINT
PANEL SYSTEM
It
is very unlikely that fire will be the only assesed risk present
during operations. By using panels on either side of the firepoint
frame, it is possible to put more specific safety equipment on
each firepoint. Fire-x-point Limited have now developed the
Multi-Point Panel System.
At present there are two different (colour coded) panels, one
for fire (red) and
the other for first aid (green).
By putting them on the same frame, you increase the overall level
of safety on, for instance, large multi-level sites.
It is the conventional practice in the construction industry to
locate the first aid equipment at the site offices. On
small sites this is probably a good idea but on large multi level
sites, the time delay for someone to go from many floors up, down
to the site offices to fetch the first aid kit and back up again
may result, in the case of a deep cut or bad burn, in a longer
recovery period, if not permanent scarring / damage. A First
Aid Panel fixed to one of the firepoints located on the site
would not be as far away as the site office and being locked the
first aid box would be unlikely to be tampered with.( Click
on the above image for more information on this panel).
Two other panels (and their ancillary equipment) are currently
under development - Water Safety (blue)
& Oil / Chemical Spill
(yellow). More information
on this evolving system is available on the Multi-Point
page.

DO
YOU KNOW?
|
That
according to the HSE, There are around 11 construction
fires every day.
As you read this web page there is probably
a fire on a construction site. Fire
can break out on most construction sites. Not only can people
be killed or injured, but fires can also be financially devastating
to those involved.The
risk of fire in many industries is covered by legislation which
is specific to their individual requirements. The
Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1996 require
measures both to prevent fires happening and to make sure
all people on construction
sites (including visitors)
are protected if they do occur. The
Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
1994 (CDM) also require those designing,
planning and carrying out projects to take construction fire safety
into account. However what the law requires in practice will vary
depending on the risks. For example, higher risk work such as
refurbishing floors in an occupied building will need many more
precautions because the risk of fire and the difficulties of escaping
are much greater.

LIGHTSTICKS
Although
available only as an accessory on the standard fire-x-point model,
consideration should be given to providing Lightsticks. These
are a safe, low cost source of light for any emergency situation.
Simply snap and shake the plastic tube. Each Lightstick gives
3 hours of high power
360 degree fluorescent green safety light. They produce no heat,
flame, or sparks and require no batteries. They are non-flammable,
non-toxic and explosion proof. A proven life
saver!
