Arnisdale on Loch Hourn is easily reached from the main road to Kyle of Lochalsh. On the map, it seems very close to Kinlochhourn , Barisdale and other exciting targets in and around Knoydart. For cars, however, these destinations might just as well be on the moon. In the distant past, this also applied to walkers and cyclists, although experienced walkers could reach Kinlochhourn in a trip taking many hours; swimming over to Barisdale remained unfeasible, unless you were a seal...

This all changed when the Arnisdale ferry service started catering for those on foot or on bicycles. For many years, a narrow, wooden boat with a 10HP outboard made adventurous, though sometimes rather hairy trips, delivering people and their gear to targets of their own choosing around the banks of Loch Hourn.

In 2005 a new era dawned for the Arnisdale ferry. It's a brand spanking new boat now, a sturdy aluminium hulled vessel, powered by a hefty 90 horsepower. It's specially built for beaching almost anywhere, with a prow adapted for easy boarding and disembarking - walk-on, walk-off.
